Next, Redskins Head coach Jay Gruden announced Saturday that tight end Logan Paulsen will have surgery Monday to repair a turf toe condition. He is out for the year and this is a big loss because he is the Redskins best blocking tight end. Tight end Niles Paul suffered a season-ending ankle injury and that hurts Robert Griffin III. Paul is a major threat in the passing game. Same as Jordan Reed who has a hamstring problem right now and might not be ready till game 2 or 3 of the Pre-Season. Reed is also a threat in the passing game like Paul. When Reed comes back from this hamstring injury he will reclaim the number 1 spot on the depth chart. Reed struggles dearly in the blocking game for a tight end.
Meanwhile, the Redskins will need somebody to step up. Chase Dixon, Je’Ron Hamm and Devin Mahina are all in the mix for snaps. Whoever blocks the best out of these 3 will most likely make the team. Unless the Redskins go out and sign a tight end like Zach Miller or trade a veteran like Vernon Davis. Maybe they will wait until teams start cutting players and pick up someone on the cut wire.
Now, Vernon Davis has been great in San Francisco, but it looks like he could use a change of scenery with the past season looking icky. It looks icky with the coaching staff changes and lack of balls thrown Vernon’s way. Vernon Davis is one of the top receiving tight ends in the league. He only was targeted 50 times.
He caught 26 passes for 245 yards and reached the end zone twice. Why is Vernon not being targeted more, also he is a nightmare for the defense. If a trade was proposed the Redskins would most likely only have to send a 3rd or 4th round pick to the 49ers. That would not be bad to land a 2 time pro bowler with lots of gas left in the tank. Vernon is an underrated blocker.
In addition, Zach Miller on the other hand is a 2 way tight end. Miller can be a quiet threat in the passing game, but makes an huge impact in the running game with his excellent blocking skills. Miller was cut by the Seahawks after the super bowl.
Miller missed 13 games last year with an season ending injury. In the 3 games he played in he recorded 6 passes for 76 yards. Miller was a huge impact in all 3 games by blocking for Marshawn Lynch. Miller should be ready for the season in a week or 2. He injured his ankle in September last season.
Finally, the Redskins have some choices to make and it will most likely result in the next man up theory with the 3 tight ends battling for the last 2 tight end openings, but if I were General Manager Bruce Allen I would go get a veteran to help out their young quarterback in RG3.
