Today, the Mariners signed catcher Chris Iannetta to a one year deal worth $4.25 mil guaranteed with some incentives, according to Jon Heyman.
Iannetta rejoins former Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto in Seattle now and most likely signed in Seattle due to the comfort level with Dipoto. The Mariners needed to add some help at the catcher spot with Mike Zunino struggling at the plate.
In fact, Iannetta had a miserable 2015 offensive campaign. The 32 year old had his worst offensive season and had a hitting line of .188/.293/.335/.628 with 10 homers and drove in 34 RBIs. The Mariners are hoping this one year deal can help them establish a consistent backstop duo. Iannetta is a league average defender, but Zunino is good defensively.
Finally, Zunino and Iannetta will look to split reps to start the season and midway through the year Iannetta or Zunino can take over. Iannetta could start the season as the number one catcher and put Zunino in Triple-A to get more at bats.
Overall: Solid pickup for a good amount. I would give this a pickup a grade of an B.
