Yesterday, the Arizona Diamondbacks won the sweepstakes for Zack Greinke. Greinke will receive $206.5 mil over the next 6 years. Greinke was mostly rumored to sign with the Giants or resign with the Dodgers.
Now, Greinke had an amazing 2015 campaign by recording a MLB leading 1.66 ERA and winning percentage of .864 (19-3). Greinke struck out 200 batters in 222.2 innings pitched over 32 starts. Greinke was amazing from the start of the season till the end. Still shocked Greinke did not win the National League CY Young Award.
In addition, Greinke will join a young Diamondbacks team that finished 79-83 in 2015. The Diamondbacks have offense they just need an Ace and other quality starters. Well they achieved “getting the Ace goal” with Greinke. Greinke in the rotation gives the Diamondbacks a fair chance on competing for the NL West crown and especially for one of the Wild Card spots.
Meanwhile, with Greinke joining the Diamondbacks rotation he will join Patrick Corbin, Rubby De La Rosa, Robbie Ray, and Chase Anderson in the rotation. Rumors have it that the Diamondbacks are interested in signing Mike Leake. Now, do not forget that this will not be the set rotation because of new acquisitions and call ups with pitching prospects like Archie Bradley, Aaron Blair, Braden Shipley, and Jake Barrett. Now, also Josh Collmenter and Daniel Hudson could get another chance at the rotation.
Finally, Dodgers will receive once the deal is complete, the Diamondbacks will forfeit the 13th overall pick in next year’s draft, since Greinke rejected the Dodgers’ qualifying offer. The Dodgers will receive a pick at the end of the first round.
Overall: This is a win-win situation for the Diamondbacks and Zack Greinke. Diamondbacks get their Ace and Greinke gets his money. Now it is time to get to work!
