Today, the Cleveland Browns extended tight end Gary Barnidge to a 3 year deal worth $12 mil, according to Pat McManamon (amount of years) and Ian Rapoport (worth of deal).
Now, Barnidge entered the season on a one year deal worth $1.2 mil and has played extremely well to earn this extension. Barnidge is 30 years old and is consider a late bloomer because it took him 7 years to get consistent playing time and a chance to be a weapon in an offense.
In fact, the Louisville product has caught 60 passes from three different quarterbacks in Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, and Austin Davis. Barnidge has also picked up 817 yards and 7 touchdowns from those 60 catches. He averages 13.6 yards per catch and an average of 68.1 yards per game. Barnidge has looked like one of the top 5 tight ends this year in football with the season he is having.
Finally, he is the Browns’ best receiving threat in their struggling offense. Also, Travis Benjamin has had a good year too, but Barnidge has been the go to guy. Barnidge is a good blocker too, which is a plus also. Now, this is a smart move by General Manager Ray Farmer, who is on the hot seat along with Head Coach Mike Pettine.
Note: Travis Benjamin is close to an extension with the Browns.
