Today, the Rays decided to add another bat to the roster by bringing in Lakeland native, Steve Pearce to a one year deal. The financial terms have not been released, but you can assume that it could be near $4 mil or $5 mil.

Next, Pearce is coming off a down season after emerging with the Orioles in 2014. Pearce’s 2015 campaign went south in a hurry by hitting only 15 homers and driving in 40 RBIs in the 92 games. Pearce batted .218 on the season, which was bad compared to his .293 average in 2014. In fact, Pearce is dominate against left handed pitching by hitting 24 homers and driving in 81 RBIs with a .262 batting average. Pearce also kills Rays pitching, which Rays’ fans are now glad that he is not on the Orioles no more.

Now, the 33-years-old is used most often as a designated hitter, but will be splitting some time in left field and first base. Pearce is not that good with the glove, but is okay to put out there for a day if needed. Now, Pearce would be in the lineup against lefties no matter what and will have a chance to earn solid reps against right handed pitching in spring training.

Finally, Pearce brings thump to the lineup and will provide solid protection to Evan Longoria. This is a smart move by the Rays and is a typical move that they usually make. If Pearce repeats the year he had in 2014, lookout for the Rays this year with their solid pitching if they do not trade one of starters.
