Earlier today, the Rays signed right handed reliever Ryan Webb. Webb will receive a one-year deal worth $1 mil with loaded incentives. The Rays had a loaded 40-man roster, so they decided to move newly acquired starter Chase Whitley to the 60-day disabled list. Whitley is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The deal and roster move was reported by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Now, Ryan Webb is a excellent pickup for the Rays, despite “my” wanting of another lefty in the bullpen, but I can not complain about Webb. The Rays need more relieve arms like Webb. The 30-year-old is one of the better ground-ball pitchers I have seen in person pitch in the modern day era. He owns a career ground-ball rate of 56.5 percent.

In addition, Webb has had a successful career, but here is what he did in the 2015 campaign. His 2015 season (Indians) went fine by posting a 3.20 ERA in 40 appearances. Webb does not strike out many batters (31), but gets his outs by forcing hitters with his unique pitches to hit themselves in easy grounders and showed by producing a 59.2 ground-ball rate. Webb piled up 50.2 innings.

Finally, Webb will eat up lots of innings and will be placed in tough situations and could be used to get one hitter out by forcing a double play with his style of pitching. He will join Boxberger, Cedeno, and Colome at the back end of the bullpen.
