Today, the Eagles are cleaning out house by moving on from Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell. They traded both players to the Dolphins for either a draft pick or two. Now, the ugly part of the deal is Maxwell’s contract, but the Dolphins will only pay his full salary for this season, but the rest of his contract is being reworked due to the fact that he is making too much money and that he is not worth that much. The deal was reported by each Ian Rapoport and Jason La Canfora. In addition, Maxwell’s 2018, 2019, and 2020 salaries are fully non-guaranteed.
Next, Maxwell is a good player, but in a defense filled with superstars like in his tenure with Seattle, they make him look great, but it did show that he was a bust signing as he could not be the lead guy in Philly. Maxwell will get a fresh start in Miami and should fit that team with a defensive line that has potential to do much damage, which pressure on a quarterback helps the corners out and make their jobs easier.
In addition, the 28-year-old cornerback finished the 2015 season by starting 14 games (missed 2 with injury) and racking up 2 interceptions. He piled up 52 tackles and forced 2 fumbles. Lastly, Maxwell will be headlining the corners group in Miami with Brent Grimes being released.
Furthermore, Kiko Alonso will add lots of help on a weak linebackers corps in Miami. He will most likely step in as the middle linebacker as 2015 starter, Kelvin Sheppard is a free agent. The 25-year-old is a special talent when healthy. He played in 11 games for the Eagles last season, but when he actually saw playing time, he was dominate. He totaled 30 tackles and 1 interception. He was still trying to find his 2013 form because he missed the whole 2014 season with a gruesome ACL tear. This defense needs this playmaking, high flying tackling machine and it comes at a cheap contract at just sitting less than $950K. He will be a unrestricted free agent after this season and if he has a good one, then he should see an extension from the Dolphins.
Finally, the Eagles are so far doing good by getting rid of Kelly’s players and letting Doug Pederson bring in his own via draft or free agency.
