The Tennessee Titans decided today to part ways with their backup quarterback. Before the Titans selected Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mettenberger was supposed to be the Titans future quarterback. After that, the LSU product was bound to be either traded or cut and now he is cut. Matt Cassel will replace Zach Mettenberger as the Titans backup quarterback to Mariota.
So far, Mettenberger has had an up and down career, but it is not all his fault as he has been on some bad teams. In Mettenberger’s career, he has not won a game (0-10) in games he started. Also, he piled up 2,347 passing yards on a 60.3 completion percentage (208-345). Those 208 completions resulted in 12 passing touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He has only played in 14 career games. The offensive line was substandard, which they allowed Mettenberger to be sacked 31 times, which in his first year, he was sacked at least 3 times in each game and in his sophomore season, he was sacked at least twice per game.
Now, the 24-year-old signal caller can be claimed by other teams, which there will be a team that claims him, but who? Well, teams like the Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If claimed Mettenberger will be under contract for next season as well, which is nice as he is a young quarterback that has potential to be a starter at the NFL level. From a base salary level, he will be scheduled to make $600k this year and $690k in 2017.
Next, I say the Colts due to the fact that Mettenberger has experience in the AFC South, but also they do not have a solid backup, which they have been bouncing quarterbacks in and out from that role. Mettenberger will be a more comfortable choice for Chuck Pagano to put in if Andrew Luck can’t play. Honestly, Scott Tolzien was okay as Aaron Rodgers backup, but he is older (28) and Mettenberger is younger (24), plus he is cheap.
Furthermore, the Cardinals look like the best landing spot for Mettenberger. Carson Palmer is coming off a tremendous 2015 season, but he continues to get older, which when Palmer retires, who will take over? Matt Barkley? Drew Stanton? Well, none of those guys are the future, which the Cardinals will need to start thinking about either drafting a young quarterback or acquiring a quarterback like Zach Mettenberger. Lastly, it seems Bruce Arians is not afraid to go out with a quarterback that he did not come in with, which you can see with an Arians and Mettenberger duo happen in Arizona.
Finally, I say the Buccaneers. They have Mike Glennon, but Glennon is on his last year on his deal and if anyone signs him in the next off-season, the Buccaneers can pick up a compensatory pick as high as a third round pick. Which, it is worth it as you can draft a quarterback to replace him, but once again, Mettenberger is under contract this year and next year if claimed. The Bucs would not have to worry about replacing Winston’s backup if they pull the trigger.
Prediction: Zach Mettenberger gets claimed by the Arizona Cardinals.
