Today, the third trade of the off-season happened and it is huge one. This is a trade that no one could predict, as Derrick Rose is done in Chicago. This is an end to a big era in Chicago. Rose will be packing up his bags and head over to New York to join Carmelo Anthony and his Knicks. Not only did the Knicks receive Rose, but they picked up a key bench player in Justin Holiday and the Knicks’ 2017 second round pick. K.C. Johnson reported the players involved heading back to New York, as he also reported that the Bulls will receive Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon, and Jerian Grant.
In addition, Robin Lopez will fill the five hole, as it seems that Joakim Noah will find a new home to play for. Calderon and Grant are better than the Bulls current point guards and they should see a rotation there with Calderon starting, as he is a better facilitator, but Grant has the potential to become a better scoring option. Grant will run the second team, but do not count out the Bulls drafting a young point guard or signing one in the near future like Russell Westbrook or interestingly bringing Derrick Rose back, but those two options seems unlikely.
Next, the former MVP will look to get his career back on track, which he showed some signs of his old self by showing some explosiveness driving into the paint. The 27-year-old has suffered multiple leg injuries, limiting him to 127 games over his past three seasons, but he played in played in three-fourths of the games this year (66 games). In those 66 games, he averaged almost 32 minutes per game and in those extended minutes, he dropped 16.4 points per game and 4.7 assists per game. He shot 43 percent from the field, which is his highest since the 2011-2012 season.
Furthermore, Rose is going to be apart of something special in New York, as Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis are ready to take that next step, plus rumors have it that Dwight Howard is interested in joining the Knicks, which they would have a nice starting five with Rose at the point, Galloway or Wroten at the two spot, with Melo playing the small forward position, and Porzingis at the four with Howard holding down the center spot. Lastly, the Knicks are thanking Aaron Affalo and Derrick Williams on opting out, if they did not they would not be able to pick up Derrick Rose and potentially maybe Dwight Howard.
Finally, Phil Jackson is on the secret hot seat and by being so, he is in a tight spot to improve quickly and this is the best way he can do so. If he pulls this off, then I will tip my hat to him, because Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and Derrick Rose all need the ball in their hands to be dominate and that they have their own egos. This is the only con of this situation if it comes true.
