During the draft, the Calgary Flames acquired Brian Elliott from the St. Louis Blues. The Blues acquired a second-round draft pick (No. 35 overall) and a conditional third-round selection on Friday night. The Flames entered tonight looking for a legitimate number one goalie if it was either Ben Bishop or Brian Elliott and they got one.
Now, this move puts the Flames in a difficult spot to re-sign either Karri Ramo or Jonas Hiller, who are both unrestricted free agents. Both had an up and down year. One of these goalies will be retained as backups to Brian Elliott.
Furthermore, Elliott posted a .930 save percentage in 42 games for the Blues during the 2015-16 campaign. Calgary had the worst save percentage of any team in the league last season and struggled to possess the puck at 5-on-5.
Finally, the Blues will most likely let Jake Allen get the first crack at the starting job with Anders Nilsson in the rear view mirror creeping up on Allen. It will be a fun battle to watch in St. Louis.
Note: He has one year left on his contract with a $2.5 million salary cap hit.
