Today, the Cubs acquired the flamethrowing southpaw in Aroldis Chapman, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Chapman is going to be a rental for the Cubs, as they try and go for the championship, but do not be surprised if the Cubs try to extend Chapman for the right price.
Now, according to Jon Heyman, the centerpiece of the deal heading back to the Yankees is the Cubs top prospect in Gleyber Torres. Also, Joel Sherman reports that Adam Warren is heading back to the Yankees and Sahadev Sharma reports that Billy McKinney is coming over in the trade as well.
Furthermore, the Cubs get the big time lefty they need in their bullpen. They just acquired Mike Montgomery from the Mariners, but they wanted another southpaw to come into bigger situations. The Cubs had to give up a lot for Chapman, but they parted ways with Gleyber Torres, due to the fact they already have All-Star Addison Russell at the shortstop position.
Finally, Chapman has posted a 3-0 record with a beautiful 2.01 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 31 games. Now, Chapman has 20 saves this season despite appearing in more games. He was splitting reps as the closer with Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances.
