Prospect Watch: Hansel Rodriguez

Today, Hanzel Rodriguez was involved in a trade that would send him to San Diego and Melvin Upton Jr to Toronto. Jon Heyman reported that Hansel Rodriguez was the piece in this whole deal.

Now, the young right-handed pitcher was the Blue Jays 18th best overall prospect in their farm system. He was signed back in 2014 out of international waters. The 19-year-old pitcher is currently in Rookie ball. Now, he should be promoted at some point to lower Class-A for the Padres.

Next, he stands at 6’2″ and weighs 170 pounds. Interestingly, for a guy his size, he can gun that fastball up to 98 mph. He usually sits around 94-96, but he knows when to pump it up. His arsenal also includes a slider and changeup, which he is still trying to get a feel for those pitches. He has made excellent strides though on those two pitches.

Finally, his 2016 campaign has gone well, as he threw 32.1 innings in six starts. In those six starts, he has earned a 2-1 record and posting a 3.06 ERA. He struck out 26 batters and only gave up one homer.
