Today, the Rays have parted ways with Steve Pearce, who has had a tremendous bounce back season. Now, Pearce is heading back to the team that gave him his first real chance in the MLB, the Baltimore Orioles, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
With the Rays trading Pearce, you can hopefully see more of Richie Shaffer at the big league level. Now, Shaffer has to prove himself quickly, as Casey Gillaspie and Jake Bauers are coming up at a rapid pace through the minors. Shaffer is currently struggling at Triple-A. He has hit eight homers and drove in 41 RBIs. In 100 games, he has batted .230.
Finally, the Rays picked up Jonah Heim in this deal, which he is currently in high Class-A. Heim was the Orioles 13th best ranked prospect, but has struggled at the plate this year by hitting .216/.300/.344 in 329 plate appearances. An interesting thing about Heim is that he is a switch-hitting catcher. He is a really good defensive catcher, as he is already calling his own game. He has a rocket of an arm behind the plate.
