Today, the Oakland Raiders made Derek Carr the highest-paid player in NFL history by giving him a five-year deal worth $125MM that includes $40MM fully guaranteed and $69MM in the first three seasons. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports NFL Insider reported the breaking news.
Carr is one of the main reasons why the Raiders are once again on the radar. The team went 3-13 his rookie season, improved to 7-9 in 2015 and was one of the best teams in the league a season ago, finishing 12-4. He missed the playoffs due to a gruesome leg injury. I think the Raiders were the only real threat to the New England Patriots last year, if Carr did not go down with that injury.
Now, Carr complete 64 percent of his passes for 3,937 yards with 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season, which seems like a boost for him receiving this deal.
Finally, Carr has had a nice start to his career by tossing 81 touchdowns and 11,194 passing yards (averages 238.2 yards per game) in only 47 games (all started). He owns a career 60.9 completion percentage and a quarterback rating of 87.9.
