Today, the Orlando Magic made some magic by picking up former Spurs guard Jonathan Simmons via free agency. According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, Simmons will receive a three-year deal worth a total of $20MM.
Simmons was given a qualifying offer by the San Antonio Spurs, but just recently they revoked their offer making him a unrestricted free agent, which means any team can go after the 28-year old late bloomer.
Furthermore, Simmons could be competing for a starting job, as the Orlando Magic have really no locks in the starting lineup when it comes to the shooting guard and small forward positions.
In addition, Simmons could be the Magic’s sixth man, if he loses out on winning a starting job. I truely think Evan Fournier would be a better fit in the sixth man role.
Finally, Simmons averaged 6.2 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 1.6 APG in part-time minutes for the Spurs. Also, Simmons also took on a larger role in the postseason, averaging 15.3 PPG and 3.3 APG when entering the starting lineup due to Kawhi Leonard going down with an injury.
