Today, Melky Cabrera will return to Kansas City after the Chicago White Sox decided to trade him back there for a pair of prospects. The White Sox will receive right-handed pitcher A.J. Puckett and southpaw Andre Davis. The White Sox announced the transaction.
In addition to the deal, MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the White Sox are paying about half of the $5.2MM that Cabrera is still owed on this year’s $15MM salary. Cabrera is set to become a free agent after this season.
Also, for Melky to become an official Royal again, the Kansas City Royals had to designated minor league righty Andrew Edwards for assignment, according to MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan.
Now, the switch-hitter is having a strong 2017 campaign at the plate. He has an batting average of .295 and through 428 plate appearances this season, he has belted 13 homers and driven in 56 RBIs. The 32-year old outfielder has murdered southpaws by posting a batting line of .296/.327/.500.
Finally, Cabrera will most likely step in as the team’s starting right fielder with Alex Gordon in left field and Lorenzo Cain in center.
