Earlier today, Thomas Vanek finally found a new team to play for in the upcoming 2017-2018 NHL season. According to Rick Dhaliwal of News 1130, the team will give the veteran winger $2MM for only one season.
Shockingly, after Thomas Vanek had a successful 2016-2017 campaign for the Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers, he only got $2MM from the Canucks. He made $2.4MM last year.
In addition to last season, the Austrian native recorded 48 points (17 goals and 31 assists) in 68 games played.
Now, he will have to try and prove himself again for this season, so that he could potentially land a better deal next off-season.
However, this is a smart move for the Canucks, who are in a rebuild mode and if Thomas Vanek or any other one-year rental has a good year, the Canucks could receive a decent haul for them and especially for future draft picks.
Finally, Vanek will most likely step in and play on the second line with Sven Baertschi and promising center Bo Horvat.
