The New Jersey Devils have locked up a budding star in Damon Severson. The young defenceman will receive a six-year deal worth $25MM, per Bob McKenzie of TSN.
Severson was a restricted free agent, and it is good to see the Devils retaining a player like Severson, who could become a cornerstone in the Devils’ defense and an all-star for many years to come.
Now, the 23-year old defender will officially become a top option on the Devils’ blueline. Also, he is the team’s best right-handed option after they traded Adam Larsson last off-season to the Edmonton Oilers.
Lastly, Severson stepped up last season after the trade of Adam Larsson. He contributed 31 points (3 goals and 28 assists) in 80 games on an average ice time of 20:21, which resulted in him finishing third on the Devils in average ice time among skaters behind Andy Greene (21:57) and Ben Lovejoy (20:46).
