The Columbus Blue Jackets extended Cam Atkinson to a lucrative deal that is worth $40.25MM over the next seven years, according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
Prior to this extension, the 28-year old winger was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
He will make an average of $5.75MM per year with his new deal, plus the Blue Jackets get him under his desire of $6MM a year.
Furthermore, Atkinson has fought his way into becoming a known player around the league and especially in the city of Columbus.
In addition, the winger has had four straight 20-goal seasons including a career-high of 35 last year, which is a nice achievement.
In nearly 400 games as a Blue Jacket, Atkinson has 233 total points that sets him fourth all-time in team history.
Finally, Atkinson’s offensive value is worth the amount the team paid for, but he is also a great defender, especially on the penalty kill.
Note: Atkinson just received a comparable deal like T.J. Oshie received in the off-season.
