The May 3rd deadline of either exercising or declining players’ fifth-year options (rookie based contracts) is coming fast.
This leads us to the Carolina Panthers, who have a key decision to make on a player that brings a lot to the table for them.
That player is linebacker Shaq Thompson, which Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that the Carolina Panthers intend to exercise his fifth-year option for a fair amount.
Furthermore, Thompson has improved each year (skills) he has been in the league and according to NFL.com, he has tallied up 167 combined tackles (112 solos), three sacks, and eight pass deflections in 42 games (36 starts).
With the presence of Pro Bowlers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis, Thompson’s development and production is limited. The team views him as a vital piece of the future and of the defense.
Lastly, with this potentially being Thomas Davis last year in his career, expect Thompson to see even more snaps (if the team struggles), plus Thompson would get more playing time in his fifth-season in the league in 2019.
Note: Shaq Thompson has been playing multiple spots for the Panthers on defense as an outside linebacker or playing the nickel.
